Dental Implants

Dental implants are used to support missing teeth. They can be used to replace missing single teeth or multiple teeth.

The use of dental implants was pioneered in Sweden in the 1960’s.  The first patients were treated in 1965.  To this day, many hundreds of thousands of dental implants have been inserted.  Dental implantology treatment has proven to be one of the most effective and predictable treatment modalities in modern dentistry.

The metal used in the manufacture of dental implants is titanium.  It is suitable for the fixation into the jaws due to its inertness and biocompatibility.

Inserting dental implants is a relatively minor oral surgical procedure.  It is usually done in the dental surgery, under local anaesthetic.  Post-operative discomfort is usually minimal and normal activities can generally be resumed after 24 – 48 hours.

After the dental implants are inserted into the jaw, a certain amount of time is left to allow the dental implant to integrate with or “bond” to the bone. This process is known as osseointegration.  After the prescribed healing time, a tooth or teeth are either screwed or cemented to the dental implant.

The teeth are usually fixed to the dental implants and cannot be removed. Overdentures can be used as an alternative to make denture wearing much more comfortable, but these are not fixed.  The fixed false teeth are looked upon as being a permanent restoration.  The fixed teeth supported by the dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. Dental implants require post-operative care.  However, this is usually carried out during your normal dental check up.

The advantage of dental implants over other forms of dental restoration is that no other teeth are used to support the false teeth.  This means that no other tooth structure is damaged when replacing missing teeth.

 Cost of Dental Implants Sydney

The cost of dental implants shouldn’t be unreachable.  Yes there are expensive materials and expensive technology used, and highly skilled professionals need to be employed but the costs should always be reasonable.  Dr Adam Alford is often asked to give a second opinion and costings, it continuously surprises him how expensive some clinics quote for dental implant work.  We often quote for a single unit dental implant plus crown approximately $4000-$5000 depending on whether a tooth needs to be extracted as well and/or a denture made as well as a temporary.

For multiple unit dental implant treatment options the cost is reduced per dental implant the more you place.  ‘For teeth in a day’, and multiple unit (teeth) bridge work and denture work, the cost is worked out depending on complexity of the case and the time it will take to carry out the treatment, the ideal number of implants etc.  We tend to now place four implants upto six implants per arch as it is safer in the long run.

Remember that  dental implant treatment is spread out over long periods of time, so therefore the costs are also spread out over this time as well. On average a single implant case will take about 8 months from start to finish.

We can organise payment plans for you.
